Originally SXSW planned on sourcing only one video through GeniusRocket but was so pleased with the choices that they ended up purchasing three. These videos were run on DirecTV, at each of the individual festivals, online through sxsw.com, and on partnering blogs.

NAFCU
The National Association of Federal Credit Unions reached out to GeniusRocket to create ads that could then be customized for local Credit Unions around the country. NAFCU has run four projects with GeniusRocket to source ads pertaining to topics ranging from identity theft to financial stability. These ads have been used by hundreds of credit unions for both local and regional television spots.

DCCC
Leading into the 2010 election, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee was looking for a creative way to educate supporters and undecided voters on pro-Democratic policy issues. The video was created, from concept to final deliverable, in less than 15 days. Running in the few days leading up to the campaign the videos was singled out by the Huffington Post as one of the creative ways that DCCC was turning to progressive online marketing. The video generated tens of thousands of hits in those few days.

Wicked Laser
Wicked Laser requested a viral style video that would show a captivating, albeit over the top use of their yet to be launched Spyder III product. Once the selected teams had been narrowed down, Wicked Laser sent the prototype product to the production teams so that it could be included in the filming. Once the video was completed GeniusRocket distributed the content online and tracked the sentiment and virality of the spot.

CoolJuice
GeniusRocket kicked off this project with CoolJuice in June 2011. Their goal? To create an entertaining television commercial that would appeal to both kids and parents, all while promoting the healthy benefits of the drink. This spot was chosen from more than 30 submissions and produced by a veteran GeniusRocket studio, Jayne Films. Filmed in LA, the spot will now run regionally on networks around the country.

VeloShine
VeloShine came to GeniusRocket with a limited budget and a need for a quality video that conveyed the passion and dedication of their core customer base of avid cyclists. GeniusRocket's community manager recruited production teams with experience filming ads related to action scenes. By working through GeniusRocket's staged process, the client was able to review concepts, provide feedback, and finally select a direct response video for production.

Heinz
Heinz needed viral style videos that would be launched online along with the release of two new products under the Heinz Poppers brand. Heinz looked for two completely different types of videos, one a stop motion animation and the other a mockumentary-style live action spot. Although it was not selected by Heinz, this spot - one of three in a series - was a GeniusRocket favorite, featuring Curt Dunkleman as a "popperazzi" pursuing the "celebrities of the stuffed jalapeño popper cream cheese world."

Fractured Atlas
Fractured Atlas, a nonprofit focused on providing benefits to creative artists, was looking for an entertaining way to show the creativity that is found in all people. They came to the GeniusRocket community for fresh ideas that would catch people's attention at events and in online marketing. They selected multiple videos and this dancing robot was a community favorite.

George Washington University

Al Fresco
EatingWell magazine turned to GeniusRocket to provide its top advertisers with an incentive package that included a high quality video. Al Fresco Chicken Sausage received numerous submissions, and in fact, did not choose the above video, but we liked it so much we couldn't help but show it off. Creator Jimmy Ahlander delivered a video that serves as an excellent example of the breadth of style and consistently high quality the GeniusRocket community produces. Because the client did not select and purchase the video, all rights still belong to the artist.

Sylvan Learning
Sylvan Learning came to GeniusRocket looking for a fresh approach to advertising their brand. After reviewing more than 60 submissions from our community of professional production studios, they chose four to be produced. This television spot was filmed in Nashville, TN and will be used online and by Sylvan Learning Centers across the country to promote their local brands.

Athenos
GeniusRocket often works through a brand's agency of record to help extend a campaign's budget. When the digital agency of Kraft Athenos Hummus was looking for a quirky yet engaging video for the brand's Facebook page they turned to GeniusRocket for a fast and affordable solution. Across 35 days Kraft was able to see 30 different pitches for the video and take one concept to production. The staged process allowed the brand and the agency to provide feedback and ensure the video stayed within the brand's creative guardrails.

AudioTechnica

Marketing Manager Crystal Griffith and GeniusRocket President Peter LaMotte recently delivered an informative webinar discussing best practices for planning a video marketing strategy and the process behind creating viral video hit "Audio 911". Check out the webinar here!

Audio-Technica has been providing high quality audio to the world through its products for over 50 years. Part of its success is that it adapts quickly to the changing consumer tastes, staying relevant to its customers through product innovations and entertaining marketing campaigns. Always looking for a creative edge, Audio-Technica’s brand team reached out to GeniusRocket for new creative concepts representing 2 differents products: their Solid Bass headphones and the microphone product line. Both projects were a huge success; the brand team ended up loving how the commercials turned out so much that they are returning to GeniusRocket for a future project.

Audio-Technica’s brand team wanted the commercial to be viral, and to capture the essence of the headphones- for “everyone who wants to move, have fun and get immersed in their music.” GeniusRocket reached out to select members within its community and received 30 unique concepts back within days. Community member The DVI Group’s pitch stuck out the most for its bold and unique look and feel; Audio-Technica knew that the this concept would be the one that would win its customers’ over. The production team recommended casting YouTube megahit Marquese Scott to add a viral boost to the idea. Filmed in Atlanta Georgia in a working surgery center, the client was on set to provide real-time feedback and product usage direction. The video first launched through and integrated social media campaign, first on the Audio Technica YouTube page, and then on Marquese Scott’s personal page. Within 4 weeks, the video received over to 700,000 hits on YouTube. The team at Audio-Technica was ecstatic. Not only were they able to launch a great commercial, they were able to do so featuring a YouTube icon using only a fraction of their marketing budget.

Both projects were a huge success; the brand team ended up loving how the commercials turned out so much that they are returning to GeniusRocket for a future project.

Running simultaneously as the Audio 911 project, Audio-Technica turned to GeniusRocket for two more videos that would hone in on a specific target segment for their high quality microphones. With a strong concept already in mind when they approached the crowdsourcing production model, GeniusRocket worked swiftly to identify talent professionals in the community who specialize in the music video production. Audio-Technica chose to employ Revolution Pictures based upon GeniusRocket’s recommendation to produce the 2 commercials. Revolution Pictures is a heavyweight in the country music video industry and brought the right level of creativity and professionalism to the project. Because Audio-Technica was on a tight deadline to launch the videos at an upcoming trade show, GeniusRocket and Revolution Pictures worked quickly to bring the concept to screen within six weeks. GeniusRocket also helped to distribute the commercial to targeted online websites to further increase reach. Similar to the “Audio 911” video, Audio-Technica was again pleased by the value for the money, knowing that going through the traditional path of producing a video would have cost them at least double.

Sylvan Learning

Sylvan Learning is a market-leading tutoring center that has helped over 2 million students since its establishment 30 years ago. Sylvan relied on promotional TV commercials to raise brand awareness, but their commercials had become dated and were not resonating with their target audience. They decided a new campaign would be needed. The marketing team evaluated traditional agencies and crowdsourcing contest sites, but found them to be either too expensive or found the quality unreliable.

Lucky, through a recommendation they found GeniusRocket. GeniusRocket was able to show the quality of an agency, yet compete at the price-point and level of creative options of a crowdsourcing contest site. Working with Sylvan’s budget and marketing goals, GeniusRocket hand-selected creative teams from the vetted professional community of qualified creative writers, creative directors, and production houses to identify who could deliver promising results for their new campaign. Through close collaboration, the Sylvan and GeniusRocket teams evaluated 30 high quality unique concepts, of which 4 were selected and made into commercials.

Sylvan not only created 4 impactful commercials with the help of GeniusRocket, Abe Froman Productions and Revolution Pictures, the turnaround time from concept to production for all 4 spots was 2 months- a super pleasant value-add that Sylvan would have had trouble finding at another agency.

Seeing the value of crowdsourcing, Sylvan took the four produced videos to their national franchisees meeting. They allowed the national franchisees to vote on which spot would become their national commercial. The remaining videos would be made available for all locations to use as they wanted in local markets.

Greg Warmbrodt, Creative Services Manager of Sylvan Learning emoted: “The work we did with GeniusRocket will pay dividends for a long time to come – and that’s not something we would have gotten with a traditional agency.” GeniusRocket and Sylvan are currently busy at work on other video campaign; stay tuned for the next latest and greatest Sylvan commercial.

NCPSSM

GeniusRocket’s Headquarters are located in proximity to our Nation’s capital; naturally, we provide services to many foundations and organizations concentrated here in the DC area.

The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare (NCPSSM) is an advocacy group that was in need of compelling call-to-action national TV spots. They needed an agency that could act speedily and help to produce a series of high quality, compelling commercials. GeniusRocket fit their need perfectly.

GeniusRocket and NCPSSM identified several strong idea concepts and charged through the project. Each commercial from ideation to production took less than 3 weeks! GeniusRocket didn’t end their commitment there. To increase distribution of the premiere commercial, GeniusRocket also developed an integrated online advertising campaign targeted at the desired audience; as a result, the video had over 250,000 hits in less than 1 week. The politically-focused commercial also ran across the nation in targeted primetime and Sunday morning news programs.

GeniusRocket’s service exceeded NPCSSM’s expectations so much so that when they needed two more videos across the following two months, GeniusRocket once again turned to their creative community of vetted professionals to provide concepts and production. Once again tapped to create high quality content in a short time frame, NCPSSM was also looking for more complex styles of messaging. The creative community delivered within the requested time frame and within budget so that the final two videos ran once more on national television and targeted markets.

Creator Questions

Q: Who is GeniusRocket?

We're a small creative firm that believes there's a better way to do advertising and marketing.

In 2007 we pioneered the crowdsourcing space, building a community of more than 15,000 creative professionals. After hundreds of projects, we realized there was a better way.

In 2011 we left the contest world to bring together the best of the crowdsourcing world - the multitude of creative ideas and talent - together with the security, privacy, and control of more traditional agencies. That model is now the foundation of GeniusRocket: an innovative platform with a staged, curated and client-driven project selection, collaboration, and production process, utilizing a fully vetted community of creative professionals.

Keep up with what we're doing, learning and talking about by following us on Twitter, liking us on Facebook, and checking out our Vimeo page.

Q: How is GeniusRocket different?

We're proud to stand apart from the rest of the advertising world. Our unique take on crowdsourcing and advertising offers a production experience that unites outstanding clients with a small, fully vetted creative community.

We operate on a non-speculative model, meaning no one works for free. No video production goes unpaid, and only those selected after the ideation and storyboard rounds go on to complete entire production projects. Our model generates lots of ideas, but only one high quality, affordable final product for the client.

Q: What happens if I get selected to move to the production stage?

If you've made it this far, congratulations! Our client has purchased your idea and is ready to see it through production. Next you'll sign a pre-production contract (in other words, this isn't cash for next weekend in Vegas) and begin attending virtual meetings with GeniusRocket and our client.

Q: How do I join the GeniusRocket creative community?

Hit up our creator application and questionnaire at http://geniusrocket.com/join. We'll be in touch soon to let you know if you've made it in, or provide feedback if we feel you aren't quite ready.

Q: How do I find out about projects?

Once you're a member of the community, we'll send the projects to you! Creators will be contacted regarding relevant projects, and you can view all available projects for you on your Mission Control page.

Q: Where will I get my creative guidance for a project?

The basis of every project is the strategic creative brief. GeniusRocket works directly with clients to make sure that each brief communicates the important details of the project. This will include information about the client, the project description and objectives, target audience, desired tone and style, and various other preferences depending on the client.

Q: Can I enter more than one project?

You can participate in as many projects as you are invited to. However we recommend that you consider the work load should you be selected for more than one.

Q: Can I enter more than one concept for a single project?

Absolutely! However, if there is a limit we will let you know in the creative brief.

Q: What are the specifications for the video in terms of formatting, uploading, etc.?

For proofing and review, we ask that you use the .mp4 standard using H.264 and AAC. For final production, specifications are determined on a project-by-project basis.

Q: How and when do I get paid?

If you are selected for the storyboard stage but not production, you will receive payment for your storyboard within 30 business days.

If you are selected for the storyboard and production stage, you will be paid for both the storyboard and 75% of production costs soon after you give us the signed pre-production contract. Timing for this payment will be included in the contract, but will be before production begins. You'll receive the remaining 25% of production costs within 30 business days after final approval of the project.

Q: How does the selection process work?

All concepts are selected and approved by the client, with input and guidance from the GeniusRocket creative team.

Q: What sort of contracts do I need to accept or provide?

Down to the nitty gritty. There are four main documents:

  • The terms of agreement when you are accepted into the creative community.
  • The pre-production contract.
  • Non-disclosure agreement, if the client wants to use one.
  • Assignment of Copyright (AOC), including, but not limited to, all your licensing agreements, crew and actor agreements, and crew and actor waivers of liability.

Q: Am I able to meet with the brand representatives?

Absolutely. The team here at GeniusRocket will facilitate all communication between creators and clients (don't go knocking on their door, we'll make sure you can get in touch!) for discussing and refining project ideas, storyboards and production. Communication prior to the storyboard stage can be done through the message board on the project discussion page.

Q: What usage rights do I have for my video if it is purchased?

When the project is complete, full rights are transferred to the client with the AOC. Only once and if the client grants approval, may you use the project in your portfolio. This approval varies from project to project, but if approved, most clients request that you wait until after the commercial is distributed to the public.

Q: Will I be listed on the credits for the video?

Typically no, credits are not given in commercial videos such as these. However on some occasions clients may give credit on their own terms. You can still brag to your friends, though, and in most cases, if the client allows, you can put the videos on your demo reel.

Q: What usage rights do I have for my video if it is not purchased?

If you are selected to produce your concept, the video is purchased and the project is complete after final client approval. If your concept is not selected for the storyboard stage, it remains 100% your property, and feel free to use it for another project in the future if it fits.

Q: How can I follow what's up with GeniusRocket?

We're easy to find. Follow us on Twitter, like us on Facebook, and check out our Vimeo page. Soon, you'll be able to read our blog and even follow some of the quirkier things we find on our Tumblr page. We'll keep you up to date on our thoughts and what's new in the world of crowdsourcing, advertising and marketing, as well as information on industry events and of course, GeniusRocket.
